The new Reliability and Performance Monitor provided by Windows Server 2008 provides you with an immediate look at CPU, disk, network, and memory usage on the server, using real-time counters, when you open this snap-in. The Reliability and Performance Monitor also provides two tools for quickly accessing server performance and the reliability of the server: the Performance Monitor and the Reliability Monitor.

The Performance Monitor enables you to monitor server hardware and services, using any number of performance objects and counters. Counters can be viewed as a graph, histogram, or report. A number of useful counters are provided, enabling you to monitor processor performance, disk usage, and memory usage.

Data collector sets enable you to add a number of performance collectors to a set and then view the data collector set data in the Reliability and Performance Monitor snap-in. Data collector sets can include performance monitors, trace events, and Registry key information.

The Reliability Monitor is a new tool provided by Windows Server 2008. The Reliability Monitor is designed to enable you to monitor (over time) the relative stability of your server. The System Stability Chart enables you to select event markers on the chart for specific dates to see what events have affected the overall reliability of the server system.

The Event Viewer enables you to view events that have been logged in the System, Application, and Security logs, or other logs that apply to specific services that you have installed on the Windows Server 2008. Each log contains entries with a specific theme; for example, the Security log contains events related to audit policies and resource use on network shares. The Setup log, on the other hand, contains events related to application installation and setup on the server.

The Network and Sharing Center provides a quick look at a server’s network connectivity status to both private and public networks. The Network and Sharing Center also gives you quick access to Sharing and Discovery Settings for your server. You can also quickly access network adapters and their local area network connections Properties dialog boxes through the Network and Sharing Center tasks.
