Configuring the Windows Firewall Properties

To open the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security properties dialog box, click the Windows Firewall Properties link in the Details pane (near the bottom of the Overview box). The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security (for the local computer) properties dialog box opens (see Figure 21.3).

Figure 21.3. The Windows Firewall properties dialog box.

The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security properties dialog box has a tab for each of the firewall profile types (or connection types, if you prefer) discussed in the previous section. As shown in Figure 21.3, you can see that the Domain Profile tab is currently configured with the firewall state for the profile set to On. Inbound connections are configured to be blocked by default, as specified by the Block setting (unless a firewall rule states otherwise). The Outbound connections are configured to be allowed, as specified by the Allow setting (again, unless you have a firewall rule that states otherwise).

The Private Profile and Public Profile tabs are configured exactly the same (by default) as the Domain Profile tab. You can see that the trick to strengthening a particular profile depends on the rules that you specify (or create) for that profile (as discussed in the next section).

A fourth tab, the IPSec Settings tab, is included on the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security properties dialog box. IPSec, or the IP Security Protocol, is discussed later in the hour.
