A terminal server provides a desktop environment and applications to thin clients. Windows Server 2008 Terminal services can provide remote connections to clients running Windows and the Macintosh operating system.

Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services provides the terminal server functionality that enables a server to function as an application server. For a terminal server to function, you must configure a TS Licensing server in the domain. The TS Licensing server can be the terminal server (configured with the TS Licensing service) or another server in the domain. TS licensing is configured and managed in the TS Licensing Manager.

Terminal server and connection settings are configured in the Terminal Services Configuration snap-in. The Terminal Services Manager enables you to monitor and control connections from remote users. Client computers need the Remote Access Connection client to connect to Terminal Services on the network. Users can log on with their domain usernames and passwords.
