Active Directory Replication and Sites

Replication is the process that allows domain controllers to keep Active Directory data consistent throughout the network. The Active Directory uses remote procedure calls to replicate data between domain controllers over IP (another reason why TCP/IP is the default transport protocol installed when you install Windows Server 2008 on a computer).

In terms of replication between sites, you can control intersite replication by the site links that you create. You can also specify the schedule for replication between sites that are linked by a site link.

To edit the properties for a site link, follow these steps:

1. Right-click a site link in the IP or SMTP folders in the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in. Select Properties from the shortcut menu. Select the General tab on the Properties dialog box, if necessary (see Figure 9.12).

2. To change the replication interval, use the Replicate Every spin box to set the minutes between replication events. To actually change the schedule for replication, click the Change Schedule button.

3. The schedule for the link opens (see Figure 9.13). By default, replication is available every day of the week. To remove certain days and time periods from the schedule, use the mouse to select the day and time frame, and then select the Replication Not Available option button. Repeat as necessary. Then click OK to close the Schedule box.

4. When you have finished working with the link’s Properties dialog box, click OK to close the dialog box.

You can modify links as needed. You may want to fine-tune replication over time after you have had an opportunity to monitor your network traffic between sites during your schedule replications.
