Summary

Windows Deployment Services (WDS) enables you to remotely install client operating systems such as Windows Vista and Windows XP. WDS can also be used to deploy server operating systems such as Windows Server 2008.

The WDS snap-in is used to manage WDS. Boot and install images can be added to the WDS server through the WDS snap-in. This snap-in also enables you to configure the WDS server.

After the WDS server has been configured, network clients with a PXE-enabled network interface can boot to the WDS server. The OS installation then takes place as if the installation were being conducted locally from a CD or DVD drive.
